Episodes of several HBO shows and a script for next week’s episode of “Game of Thrones” have reportedly been leaked online in a major cyber attack on the network after hackers breached the system and stole 1.5 terabytes of data.
The network confirmed the hack in a statement to the Daily News, and said the “recent” incident “resulted in a compromise of proprietary information.”
Upcoming episodes of “Ballers” and “Room 104” have already been released online, as has a written treatment allegedly for next week’s episode of the wildly popular “Game of Thrones,” according to Entertainment Weekly. The hackers have also promised more content will be uploaded at some point in the future.
HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler sent an email to employees informing them of the breach Monday morning, and promised that the network, along with “outside experts,” was working “round the clock to protect our collective interests.”
“Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling and disturbing for all of us,” he wrote. “The efforts across multiple departments have been nothing short of herculean.”
According to EW, the hackers blasted out a typo-ridden email to reporters on Sunday announcing their upcoming plan.
Hi to all mankind. The greatest leak of cyber space era is happening,” the email reportedly read. “What’s its name? Oh I forget to tell. Its HBO and Game of Thrones…!!!!! You are lucky to be the first pioneers to witness and download the leak. Enjoy it & spread the words. Whoever spreads well, we will have an interview with him. HBO is falling.”
No actual episodes of “Game of Thrones” have been leaked yet, but security breaches like this have become a common occurrence for networks and studios
In 2015, the first four episodes of Season 5 of “Game of Thrones” were leaked online one day before the premiere, and were downloaded more than 100,000 times within the first three hours.
In April, Netflix was hacked and episodes of “Orange is the New Black” were leaked online ahead of the season five premiere and in 2014, a major cyberattack at Sony leaked thousands of emails, in addition to scripts and salary information.
