Crime Branch on Monday said cases relating to cyber crimeincreased astronomically in the state. According to an official statement, at least 669 cyber crime cases have been registered till October this year as against total number of 378 such cases reported in 2016.
“We will organise a two-day training programme on Tuesday on cyber security and investigation for personnel of different police stations in the state. The officers will be trained to enhance their skill of cracking critical cyber offences,” additional director general (Crime Branch) Santosh Upadhaya said.
After recent official notification on establishment of cyber police stations at Berhampur, Sambalpur and Rourkela, the state government has identified three more cities–Bhubaneswar, Jeypore (Koraput district) and Balasore to set up police stations to exclusively deal with IT-related offences. Decision to open cyber police stations in different district was taken in 2014-2015 to ease out the pressure from the lone cyber police station in Cuttack. The cyber police station at Cuttack functions under the state Crime Branch.
Cyber crime, which was something unheard in 2012-13, soared in the past two years in the state. Such a crime assumed significance as Odisha in 2015 witnessed a whopping 211 per cent rise in cyber crimes, the fastest growing trend in the country if the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data is any indication. A total of 386 cybercrime cases were reported in 2015 as against 124 in 2014, the data said.
